Brands were rated using BrandIndex’s Buzz score* which asks respondents, “If you've heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?”

The Buzz Rankings chart shows the brands with the highest average Buzz scores* between January and December 2016.

The Buzz Improvers chart ranks the brands with the highest increase in Buzz comparing scores in years 2015 and 2016. Both scores are representative of the general population.

The top Buzz improvers included Huawei, from negative to positive, while Xiaomi and Instagram added to their already-positive scores.

Other highlights included:

+Social media brands Facebook, YouTube, an Alphabet brand and Instagram, a Facebook brand, scored in the 40s, with Alphabet's Google+ next in line with a score in the mid-twenties. Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest were in the lead for most-improved brands.

+The mobile space was dominated by Apple's iPhone, the Samsung Galaxy S series and Apple as brands. Huawei, Xiaomi, and telecommunications company Tiphone demonstrated the most Buzz improvement. Telecom and mobile operators that were the most well-known included Telkomsel, SimPATI and Indosat. Bakrie Telecom - which made headlines for its debt in 2015, CDMA players Telkom Flexi and StarOne did best on Buzz improvement, though all still remain in negative territory. Telkom Flexi and StarOne have closed down, while Bakrie does not appear to have a working website.

+The e-commerce/m-commerce category saw Tokopedia, e-travel site Traveloka and Bukalapak as its three leaders. Tokopedia, Bukalapak and Blibli seem to have grown in popularity over the last year. Blibli ranked 5th in the leaderboard.

*All Buzz scores listed have been rounded to a single decimal place; additional precision was used internally to assign ranks.
