Why we should be worried about IoT security

Dr Zulkifar Ramzan, CTO, RSA Labs says that the Internet of Things (IoT) suffers from several problems:

- When new IoT devices enter a network, it is not clear how they are identified

- There are no standards on how to manage risk associated with the devices. "To understand and measure risk you need visibility," he said during a session on research projects at RSA during a press and analyst day ahead of the RSA Conference Asia Pacific & Japan 2018.

- Analytics are needed to drive meaningful insights on what these devices might be doing. There is a lot of work around identity and access management as what is on the devices typically cannot be controlled.

- Encryption becomes challenging in very constrained environments.

There are still questions around overall device management, such as how connected devices are updated, he added.
