Today at Facebook's F8, Facebook demonstrated how it wants to grow Messenger's instant chat capabilities into a platform that more people will use for more of their communications.
The company introduced a platform for developers to easily create apps that integrate with the app a la Wechat or Line. Messenger Platform adds more value for the 600 million people who use Messenger every month, the company said. There are more than 40 new apps that users can download to enhance their conversations with GIFs, photos, videos, audio clips and more.

Facebook also previewed Businesses on Messenger, which will receive a soft launch with a couple of partners at some point in the future. The company explained that one way Businesses on Messenger might work is the option to communicate with a business via Messenger. For example, a Messenger user can receive updates from an e-retailer in Messenger after an online purchase. Such updates could include order confirmations and the ability to track an order.
