Reliance JioInfocomm eyes lamp posts for 4G LTE and Wi-Fi services

Reliance JioInfocomm is planning to extend the reach of its 4G services through the poles of street lights from Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST).

Reliance Jio has proposed to hire spaces on the street poles for the installation of small cell 4G long term evolution (LTE) equipment, unlicensed band radio, integrated kiosks and outdoor Wi-Fi apps.

The pilot project will cover 215 lamp posts in Mumbai's 'D' ward, with installation to start with 25 poles. BEST will get a yearly rent of Rs 1.5 lakh from every light pole before kiosks are installed; post-kiosk the rental jumps to Rs 60,000 per lamp post.

The standing committee of BEST has yet to decide on the approval of the proposal.

Reliance Jio plans to launch 4G LTE services in 800 cities between April and June. The company is preparing 4G dongles and Mi-fi (mobile Wi-Fi) devices which will let consumers to use 4G from any phone that has a Wi-Fi feature. A single Mi-fi device may be used by 10 handsets at a time. The dongles will offer average speeds of 16-18 Mbps, almost three times the speed offered on its 3G dongles.

Reliance Jio has already laid cables and built more than 30,000 new towers and leased more to provide enhanced services. At a later stage, the company plans to provide fibre to homes and offices. Fibre broadband will be able to generate speeds as high as 100 Mbps and host television programmes as well.

In August, 2010, Reliance Jio acquired pan-India 2,300 MHz spectrum in 22 areas. This spectrum is most likely to be used for its 4G services. Operating from homes and offices had some limitations with this band. As they form the largest section of the consumers, Reliance Jio bought the 1,800 MHz spectrum in 14 regions, in February 2015. The company will use this spectrum to offer both data and voice services.
